NIDDK Health Communication Programs

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) disseminates science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases. NIDDK health communication programs ensure that this information is imparted to health care providers and the public for the direct benefit of patients and their families. ​

NIDDK information clearinghouses and information services answer inquiries from the public, develop and distribute health information, and work closely with professional and patient organizations and government agencies to coordinate health information resources.

Weight-control Information Network

The Weight-control Information Network (WIN) is a federally mandated information service of the NIDDK. Established in 1994, WIN provides the general public, health professionals, and the media with up-to-date, science-based information on obesity, weight control, physical activity, and related nutritional issues. WIN also developed Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better, a national initiative to encourage black women to maintain a healthy weight by becoming more physically active and eating healthier foods.

National Diabetes Education Program

The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is a federally funded program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Established in 1997, NDEP includes more than 200 partners at the federal, state, and local levels, working together to improve the treatment and outcomes for people with diabetes, promote early diagnosis, and prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

National Kidney Disease Education Program

The National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) promotes evidence-based interventions to improve understanding, detection, and management of kidney disease. Established in 2000, NKDEP seeks to improve early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD), facilitate identification of patients at greatest risk for progression to kidney failure, and support the coordination of Federal responses to CKD.

Healthy Moments Radio Broadcast

Healthy Moments is an annual series of weekly radio episodes sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Healthy Moments features Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers, the Director of NIDDK, a renowned researcher on the area of sickle cell anemia. Each week Dr. Rodgers offers tips on how to prevent and control diseases that are important to the community and NIDDK’s mission. Let's Talk About Bowel Control Awareness Campaign

The NIDDK Bowel Control Awareness Campaign seeks to raise public awareness of fecal incontinence to aid in prevention of incontinence and to improve the lives of men and women living with the condition. Talking about bowel control problems is the first step towards management. The campaign provides current, science-based information about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of bowel control problems to help start the conversation. 

The Awareness Campaign is an initiative of the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, a service of the NIDDK.

Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign

The NIH Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign seeks to heighten awareness of celiac disease among health care professionals and the public. The Awareness Campaign offers materials and resources about the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and management of celiac disease, also known as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy. The Awareness Campaign was developed by NIDDK with coordination among the professional and voluntary organizations working on celiac disease.

The Awareness Campaign is an initiative of the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, a service of the NIDDK.
