Current Responsibilities and Activities

I direct the Diabetes: Treatment, Prevention, and Complications program for basic, translational, and clinical research on acute and chronic complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.  The portfolio’s basic research examines the molecular and cellular impact of hyperglycemia and the other metabolic changes of diabetes that underlie tissue damage in multiple organ systems.  The portfolio’s clinical and translation research covers all aspects of diabetic wound healing; the neurovascular aspects of diabetic peripheral and central neurologic damage; and clinical research with outcome measures on multiple diabetic complications.  My related activities include coordinating diabetic complications research for the Type 1 Diabetes Special Funding Program.
