I am director of the Division of Nutrition Research Coordination and associate director for nutritional sciences at the NIDDK. I am responsible for coordinating and maintaining a broad knowledge base of ongoing nutritional sciences, obesity, and physical activity research activities. As such, I represent the Division and the NIH in Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or interdepartmental committees dealing with nutrition, obesity, and physical activity programs. My responsibilities include establishing and maintaining relationships with professional societies and with other federal and nonfederal organizations involved in nutritional sciences, obesity, and physical activity research and training.
In support of the Department, I help to promote more awareness and coordination of activities across agencies and also serve as the HHS senior health official on site during responses to natural and man-made disasters. In addition, I am a retired Assistant Surgeon General and Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service.
Nutrition, obesity, and physical activity are major drivers of health. Research to improve nutrition and physical activity and reduce obesity should result in a healthier American society.
