Description:

The overall goals of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Career Transition Award (K22) are to enable outstanding individuals to obtain further research training within the NIDDK Intramural Research Program and to facilitate their successful transition to an extramural environment as independent researchers.

The NIDDK intramural research environment provides a rich and exciting opportunity for the training of postdoctoral fellows and early career scientists. The aim of the NIDDK K22 program is to provide highly qualified young investigators with an opportunity to receive an intensive research training experience in the NIDDK Intramural Research Program and then to provide them with bridge funding to facilitate start-up of their research programs at extramural institutions. To achieve these objectives, the NIDDK Career Transition Award will provide a maximum of five years of research support divided into two phases: Phase I is for three years of research training at an intramural NIDDK facility while Phase II is for two years of research at an extramural (non-NIH) institution.

Applicants must have a research or a health-professional doctorate or its equivalent, and must have significant prior research experience, during which the potential for highly productive basic or clinical research has been demonstrated. It is anticipated that awardees will subsequently obtain research project grants to support the continuation of their work and that such individuals will possess a deep-abiding commitment to a life-long scientific career in biomedical research.
