Immunology Section

Barbara Rehermann, M.D., Chief

Section Staff

Xenia Chepa-Lotrea, Postbaccalaureate IRTA student

Xenia Chepa-Lotrea graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a double major in microbiology and biochemistry. She joined the Immunology Section, LDB, NIDDK in 2012 and is studying the role of natural killer cells in viral hepatitis.

Lauren Holz, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Holz received her Ph.D. from the Centenary Institute, Sydney Australia investigating mechanisms of liver tolerance. She joined the Immunology Section, LDB, NIDDK in 2009 and is currently studying the host immune response to infections with hepatotropic viruses using both clinical samples from infected patients (to study B cells in patients with HCV-induced mixed cryogobulinemia) and the mouse model of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection (to study virus-induced mechanisms of immune response regulation).

Heiyoung Park, Ph.D., Staff Scientist

Dr. Park received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rutgers University / UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, NJ. As a postdoctoral fellow and then as an instructor at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA she studied molecular mechanisms of innate immunity and inflammation. After joining the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, NIH as a research fellow she studied the pathogenesis of a human autoinflammatory disease associated with heterozygous mutations in the TNF receptor 1, and the effect of Yersinia virulence factors on host immune responses. She also established a conditional knockout mouse model for a Zinc finger DNA binding protein. Dr. Park joined the Immunology Section, LDB of NIDDK as a staff scientist in 2009 to study innate immune response, in particular the role of type III interferons, in viral hepatitis.

Su-Hyung Park, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Park received his Ph.D. from Pohang University of Science Technology in Seoul, Korea for studies on adaptive immune responses in response to DNA vaccination. He joined the Immunology Section, LDB, NIDDK in 2008 and is pursuing several studies on HCV and HBV interaction with host immune responses using clinical samples from infected patients and animal models of infection.

Stephan Roßhart, M.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Roßhart received his M.D. from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany with a research thesis in the Department of Immunology, Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine, he joined the Immunology Section, LDB, NIDDK in 2013 and is studying the regulation of antiviral immune responses in the lymphocytic choriomenigitis virus (LCMV) model of acute and chronic hepatitis

Elisavet Serti, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Serti received her Ph.D. from the Molecular Virology Lab of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute in Athens, Greece studying the effects of the HCV structural proteins on signaling pathways. She joined the Immunology Section, LDB, NIDDK in the spring of 2011 to pursue translational studies on innate natural killer cell responses to infections with hepatotropic viruses (HBV, HCV, HDV).
