Executive Summary

Recent advances in precision nutrition and circadian metabolism research have come from studies utilizing continuous subcutaneous glucose monitors, often integrated with widely available mobile devices. However, diet leads to excursions in thousands of nutrients and metabolites, some of which are linked to the metabolism of gut microbiota. To advance precision nutrition, microbiome, and circadian metabolism research, there is a critical need to develop tools and devices that can continuously monitor a broader range of nutrients and metabolites. That is the goal of this staged initiative. The opportunity to realize this goal has come from increasing accessibility of mobile platforms and the miniaturization of analytical techniques, ion selective electrodes, and solid-state clinical chemistry methods.
