Cardiovascular complications significantly shorten the lives of individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The standard risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) only partially explain this increased mortality because the pathologic mechanisms are different for CVD in T1D compared to type 2 diabetes (T2D) and no diabetes. The Cardiovascular Biorepository for T1D aims to ethically obtain and evaluate cardiovascular (CV) tissue from individuals with T1D with and without clinical CVD to better understand the development of atherosclerosis and other cardiac pathologies. The project will have three highly interactive activities: tissue procurement, tissue analysis and data coordination. The overall goal is to identify critical human cells, pathways and targets for new therapies in T1D CVD to lessen the burden of this lethal complication.
