The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) randomized clinical trial sought to determine the long-term health effects of a behavioral lifestyle program designed to produce weight loss in people with overweight/obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Participants were assigned to either an Intensive Lifestyle Intervention (ILI) group or a Diabetes Support and Education (DSE) group, and the intervention was delivered for up to 11 years. Although there was no reduction in the primary outcome of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the intervention led to numerous other health benefits. After the conclusion of the randomized trial in 2012, an observational study has followed participants. This proposed renewal would support an additional 5 years of follow-up of study participants to allow further evaluation of longer-term outcomes related to obesity, diabetes, aging, and healthcare utilization.
