Executive Summary

The program on Promoting Organ and Tissue Donation Among Diverse Populations was initially launched in FY2002 to address the disparities in organ and tissue donation among racial and ethnic minority communities. To date, awarded projects have focused on community-based programs to increase organ and tissue donation among African American, American Indian, Hispanic and Asian communities. Around 20,000 individuals from underrepresented communities have been included in these projects. Previously funded projects have improved our understanding of some of the barriers and challenges to organ and tissue donation among diverse populations and have improved individuals’ awareness towards the benefits of organ and tissue donation. Continued education and outreach to the public, especially to racial and ethnic minority communities, are critical to increasing access to organ transplantation and participating in organ and tissue donation. Renewal of this program will contribute to reducing health disparities and advancing health equity in NIDDK diseases.
