Executive Summary
This is a proposal for a workshop to identify multidisciplinary, state of the art approaches, and scientific gaps in clinical and translational research focused on congenital obstructive uropathy. Prenatal urinary tract dilation (hydronephrosis) occurs in 1-2% of pregnancies and is bilateral in 20-40%; a substantial proportion is associated with obstruction at some level within the urinary tract. Although the severity of hydronephrosis is generally correlated with the occurrence and degree of obstruction, associated renal dysfunction is highly variable and may be primary and/or secondary. The wide phenotypic spectrum observed postnatally, coupled with suboptimal tools to assess, with precision, the severity of obstruction or associated ipsilateral renal function have hampered progress towards accurate diagnosis and optimal care. This workshop will address how improved phenotyping based on advances in genetics, proteomics, metabolomics, developmental biology, renal physiology and/or imaging can improve opportunities to individualize care.
