Executive Summary
This initiative encourages multidisciplinary teams to elucidate fundamental mechanisms of comorbidities, coinfections, or complications associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or its treatment that are within the mission of the NIDDK. The teams should encompass strong expertise in both HIV science and physiology/pathobiology of end organs and metabolism as appropriate for specific projects. These teams should result in a synergy that leads to more rigorous, thorough, and in-depth evaluations that might otherwise be achieved. Because this initiative addresses the need to develop such teams, there is no expectation that teams necessarily have previous publications with each other or otherwise have a history of extensive previous collaboration.
