This is a vertical bar chart whose x-axis lists all the of the NIH institutes, centers, and offices that have provided funding for nutrition research in fiscal year 2016. The institutes, centers, and offices are listed in alphabetical order. The y-axis is millions of dollars from zero to six hundred million. There is one vertical bar for each institute, center, or office. Each bar indicates how much was spent on nutrition research in fiscal year 2016. NIDDK, NHLBI, and NCI have the tallest bars, indicating that they funded the greatest amount of nutrition research.

Altogether, NIH made 4,211 awards and spent $1.6 billion dollars for nutrition research in fiscal year 2016. However, until the final spending figures for FY 2016 are released, these numbers are only estimates.

Proposed NRTF Strategic Planning Timeline

This visual shows the timeline of the NIH Nutrition Research Strategic Planning Effort. The NRTF was established in October 2016. At the time, staff from the Office of Nutrition Research had almost completed a literature review to identify a list of research gaps and opportunities that could be used as a starting point for discussion. This was completed in the fall of the 2016. Also in the fall, an NIH writing group was formed. This writing group developed a detailed outline over the course of the fall 2016 and spring 2017. During the spring of 2017, the writing group also conducted a crowdsourcing effort to gather input from key external stakeholders.

In June 2017, the NRTF held their first meeting where a strawman outline was presented. Later in June input was also gathered from an external thought leaders meeting. This input will be analyzed over the summer and fall of 2017 and will be used to assist the writing group as they develop a draft strategic plan.

This plan will be presented to the NRTF task force in April of 2018. There will then be a period for public comment, revisions and final clearance. The final draft is expected to be delivered in October 2018.‚Äč
