AgRP neurons of the arcuate nucleusThis image depicts AgRP (agouti-related peptide) neurons (magenta), critical drivers of hunger that sit at the base of the hypothalamus in the arcuate nucleus. Given their anatomical position in the brain, they are in an ideal position to integrate signals from both brain and peripheral organs. Excitatory afferent control of AgRP neuronsThis model summarizes the baroque nature of the AgRP hypothalamic feeding circuit. Excitatory inputs from select orexigenic neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus make monosynaptic connections to AgRP neurons and consequently orchestrate feeding behavior.
