Supporting Pharmacists in Managing CKD

Pharmacists play a crucial role on the health care team and are critical to improving early detection and slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). NKDEP supports a Pharmacy Working Group (PhWG) to increase pharmacists' knowledge of CKD and provide them with the tools and resources to help them educate their patients about the disease.

Counseling Patients on NSAID Use to Prevent Kidney Injury - Continuing Education Program

Download Module (PPT, 1.50 MB)

The PhWG—led by chair, Amy Barton Pai—developed a training program for pharmacists on how to counsel high-risk patients on avoiding NSAIDs to prevent acute kidney injury. The program offers 0.5 hours of continuing education credit through the University of Kentucky’s CECentral. The module content is also available to review below.

The program includes two videos which pharmacists may find helpful—an animation that demonstrates how prescription and non-prescription drugs affect blood flow through the kidneys and a video vignette of pharmacist-patient interaction illustrating an opportunity to counsel a patient on NSAID avoidance.
