Riñones, Tesoros (Kidneys, Treasures) Education Program for Community Health Workers aims to educate Hispanics at risk for kidney disease about the need for testing and steps they can take to protect their kidneys. The program is designed to help community health workers (CHWs) or "promotores de salud" educate Hispanics living with diabetes about kidney disease and kidney failure. The content is intended to complement existing diabetes education curricula, but it can also be used as a standalone program. CHWs can use this toolkit wherever they teach in their community, including community centers, hospitals, community health clinics, continuing education classes, schools, faith communities, or even homes.
The bilingual toolkit consists of a training manual, a flipchart to use during the educational sessions, and patient handouts to give to participants during the class.
Training Manual (Bilingual: Spanish and English)
This training manual covers four topics:
Each section of the manual provides CHWs with talking points and activities that provide additional information and context for specific pages in the flipchart. It also contains questions and answers about common misconceptions on each topic.
- Diabetes and How It Affects the Kidneys
- Keeping Your Kidneys Healthy
- Living with Kidney Disease
- Treating Kidney Failure
