One of the best ways to manage your diabetes is eating healthy. Not only will you feel better – you’ll also lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and other diabetes complications.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Healthy eating – knowing when to eat, what to eat, and how much to eat – is a major part of taking good care of yourself, and it’s one way to keep your blood sugar levels on target.

Here are some healthy eating tips for you to consider:

  • For breakfast, try two slices of whole grain toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter or an ounce of low-fat cheese with a hard-boiled egg.
  • Pack your lunch. Make a sandwich with turkey or lean beef. A couple days a week, add fruit instead of chips.
  • Choose a healthy mix of foods each day and try not to skip meals.
