Packing Smart to Enjoy a Great Trip Ahead
If you have diabetes and are traveling during the holidays, Dr. Rodgers has helpful suggestions.
Do you or a family member have diabetes and have plans to travel over the holidays? If so, I have some packing tips for your trip.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.
Whenever you travel, your diabetes goes along with you. Here are a few suggestions to consider when packing:
- Take twice the amount of diabetes medications and supplies you normally need.
- If you use insulin, pack it in an insulated bag with frozen gel packs along with a glucagon emergency kit.
- Keep snacks, glucose gel, or tablets with you in case your blood sugar drops.
- Bring all of your diabetes supplies in your carry-on bag, including your snacks, and keep them within arm’s reach.
And, always keep your medical insurance card and emergency phone numbers handy.
