DR. RODGERS: When it comes to type 2 diabetes, losing a small amount of weight can make a big difference.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Type 2 diabetes is a major cause of death. If you are overweight or have obesity, over 45, or have a family history of diabetes, you could be at risk. The good news is, if you are overweight, you can lower your risk. My colleague, Dr. David Nathan, oversaw the research that led to this finding. Dr. Nathan reports:

DR. NATHAN: Losing a modest amount of weight, increasing your activity levels a bit, will help decrease the development of diabetes. People who don’t lose the weight but increase their activity may get some benefit, but not as much as those people who actually lose the weight.

DR. RODGERS: Healthy eating and physical activity can help you lose that weight and lower your risk for type 2 diabetes.
