If you have obesity, elevated cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes, you may be at risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.
Hi, I'm Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.
NAFLD, a condition in which excess fat is stored in your liver, has few or no symptoms. Most people have no complications, but in some people, cirrhosis—which is scarring that permanently damages your liver—or liver cancer can occur.
If you do have symptoms, you may feel tired or have discomfort on your right side between your chest and hips.
If you are overweight or have obesity, losing weight by making healthy food choices, limiting portion sizes, and being physically active can improve NAFLD.
