Building healthier lifestyle habits can help you take charge of chronic kidney disease, or CKD.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Healthy habits can help strengthen your mental and physical health and manage your chronic kidney disease.

Work towards a healthy weight. Focus on eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low- or no-fat dairy products. Avoid salty, sugary, or highly processed foods and drinks.

Get active. Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Keep in mind that every little bit helps your kidneys and your heart.

Manage your stress. Consider meditation or other relaxing activities. Chat with friends, family, spiritual leaders, or health professionals when you’re feeling down or to celebrate your accomplishments.

And, I know it’s hard, but try to set a bedtime routine to help you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

Follow us @NIDDKgov. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers.
