DR. RODGERS: Health coverage includes provider services, medication, hospital care, and special equipment when you’re sick. Did you know it’s also important when you’re NOT sick?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

My colleague, Dr. Cara James, director of the Office of Minority Health at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, explains:

DR. JAMES: Most health coverage includes immunizations, annual visits, obesity screening, and counseling for free. Health plans can differ by the providers you see and how much you have to pay. Medicaid and CHIP (the Children’s Health Insurance Program) also vary by state.

DR. RODGERS: Check to make sure you understand your covered benefits, cost-sharing terms, and coverage limits and exceptions.
