When it comes to helping people with obesity lose weight, you may have heard the terms gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and gastric band. These are types of bariatric or weight loss surgery.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

People who have severe obesity often have related health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Bariatric surgery can help people lose weight and improve those problems by making changes to the digestive system. It can make the stomach smaller or change the small intestine so it absorbs fewer calories.

People with severe obesity who have been unable to lose weight or keep weight off may be candidates. Bariatric surgery has risks and benefits so it’s important to talk to your doctor first.
