Current Fellows

Ehsan Chitsaz, M.D., M.H.Sc.

Ehsan Chitsaz, M.D., M.H.Sc.

Residency: University of Massachusetts, Worcester, MA
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT
Graduate Degree: Clinical Epidemiology - University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
Medical Degree: Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran
Year in Program: 3rd year
Research Projects: My research interest include clinical, epidemiological and outcomes research in a spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver disorders.  I am currently involved in evaluating the presentation, natural history and diagnosis of familial midgut carcinoid tumor - through an ongoing cohort of familial carcinoid patients at the NIH Clinical Center.  I am interested in population-based risk stratification methods for colorectal cancer screening, volumetric assessments as a surrogate marker for diagnosis and outcomes evaluation of liver disorders, and developing biomarkers to predict gastrointestinal inflammation.

Bryan F. Curtin, M.D.

Residency: University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD
Medical Degree: University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD
Year in Program: 3rd Year
Research Projects:  My research interest include multiple areas within gastroenterology including Clostridium Difficile infection, Barrett's esophagus, and quality improvement in screening colonoscopy.  My research projects include studying the treatment efficacy of high dose proton pump inhibitors in the treatment of Barrett's esophagus and the utilization of educational applications to enhance the quality and patient experience of bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy.

Ben L. Da, M.D.

Residency: University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA
Medical Degree: University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ
Year in Program: 2nd year
Research Projects: My research interests encompass both luminal GI and hepatology.  I am currently working on projects related to familial carcinoid tumors, CORI database, and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH).  The familial carcinoid tumor protocol focuses on evaluating new diagnostic methods and treatment modalities in patients at high risk for developing carcinoid tumors.  Regarding the CORI database, my aim is to better describe clinical features and incidences of gastrointestinal malignancy and precursor lesions within distinct populations inside the United States.  For NCPH, I hope to develop both a diagnostic scoring system to improve earlier diagnosis of NCPH as well as a prognostic scoring system.

Natasha Kamal, M.D.

Residency: The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY
Medical Degree: University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD
Year in Program: 2nd year
Research Projects: My research interests span multiple areas of gastroenterology including liver diseases and inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases.  My current projects and activities include indicators and biomarkers in liver alcoholic liver disease, studying the gastrointestinal manifestations of chronic granulomatous disease and the use of biologics in this population, characterizing and understanding drugs that cause drug induced liver injury (DILI), and hypereosinphilic syndrome/eosinophilic gastroenteritis and the use of elemental diets in this population.
