- A condition in which stomach contents flow back up into your esophagus, leaving a taste of food or acid in the back of your mouth. Refluxed stomach acid that touches the lining of the esophagus can cause heartburn. Also called acid reflux, acid regurgitation, heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
