Meeting Summary

Meeting Background

Urinary incontinence in women is common, costly and consequential and associated with common medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The NIDDK and NICHD have funded many treatment trials that have been widely published. The broad impact of the completed research on clinical care has not been considered. Is there more value to obtain from completed research?  Additionally, what are the future needs that will drive improvement in the care of women with urinary incontinence?

Meeting Objectives

To bring together health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, consumer advocates and governmental agencies with interest in the treatment of urinary incontinence to achieve the following goals:

  1. Determine the key scientific advances in the treatment of urinary incontinence in women made by NIH/NIDDK funded clinical research
  2. Identify the extent to which and how their findings have impacted treatment of patients, been adopted by health care professionals, other researchers and agencies
  3. Determine the audience-specific messages that will facilitate dissemination and uptake of the results of the discussed studies
  4. Define unmet needs in urinary incontinence research or empirical evidence to stimulate the submission of investigator initiated (R01) and other grant applications to the NIDDK  and other NIH institutes and government agencies to address challenges in the identification, diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence in women.  Studies of particular interest would have broad applicability to the affected population
