Meeting Summary
Background
Urinary Stone Disease (USD) is an important health care problem affecting both adults and children, causing pain and suffering for the patient and a financial burden to the Nation. One in 11 Americans now has USD, and the prevalence is increasing. According to the NIDDK-funded study, Urological Diseases in America, the direct medical cost of USD in the United States is $10 billion annually, making it the most expensive urologic condition.
NIDDK is organizing this meeting to discuss and prioritize the clinical and basic USD research needs and identify strategies and recommendations on how best to address those needs. Clinicians, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in USD are welcome.
Meeting Objectives
- Present current information on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of USD and lay out the evidence for management strategies
- Discuss and prioritize the areas where additional USD research is needed and how best to address those needs
- Provide recommendations to inform potential future funding initiatives by NIDDK
