- The presence of three or more of these medical problems: large waist size, high triglycerides, low levels of HDL ("good?") cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Also called insulin resistance syndrome.
