Don’t let food poisoning spoil your holiday fun!

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Foods and beverages contaminated with germs can make you very sick. Serious cases may cause dehydration and require hospitalization. Food poisoning is most harmful to children and people who are older or pregnant.

To keep your food safe

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after preparing and eating food.
  • Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafoods away from other foods.
  • Use a separate cutting board for raw meat.
  • Cook foods to the recommended temperature.
  • Refrigerate foods that can spoil within 2 hours of cooking.
  • And clean countertops and utensils before and after each use.
