DR. RODGERS: The human mouth is home to entire microbiome of bacteria, billions of them living right between our lips. When this delicate balance of flora is disrupted, it can spell trouble for our oral health.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, a director at the NIH. My colleague, Dr. Rena D’Souza, Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, shares more.

DR. D’SOUZA: When our oral microbiome is disturbed, we become vulnerable to infections and bone loss around the teeth. An NIDCR study found that certain gut bacteria may contribute to these conditions. This adds to evidence suggesting a correlation between gut and oral health.

To keep your gut and oral health in check, speak to your doctor. They may recommend a specialized diet to restore your gut microbiome, which could improve your oral health in the process.

DR. RODGERS: Follow us @NIDDKgov. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers.
