DR. RODGERS: Health disparity studies may help prevent and treat chronic diseases in communities of color.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, a Director at the NIH.

My colleague, Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable, Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities at NIH, explains.

DR. PÉREZ-STABLE: Some diseases disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority groups. For example, African Americans and Latinos have higher rates of kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity. They have less access to quality food and health care and are more likely to live or work in conditions that raise their risk for worse health outcomes.

NIMHD funds research on the links between chronic disease and determinants of health – like behavior, physical and sociocultural environments, and health systems – to improve prevention and treatment approaches for those most affected by health disparities.
