The basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the production and function of blood cells.
The Hematopoiesis and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology program focuses on understanding the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the production and function of blood cells in health and disease. Major areas of interest include the basic mechanisms involved in regulating the production and terminal development of blood cells, referred to as hematopoiesis. Specific areas of interest include: hematopoietic stem cell and progenitor cell phenotypes; regulation of gene expression during hematopoiesis; regulatory molecules and cytokines that influence stem cell and progenitor cell survival, proliferation, and maturation; mechanisms of hematopoietic cell cycle control and lineage commitment; comparative studies of hematopoiesis across species; ontogeny of hematopoietic tissue development; hematopoietic stem cell plasticity in mesenchymal tissue development; hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors as vehicles for gene therapy; and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and the development of techniques for establishing stable hematopoietic chimeras in order to treat heritable blood diseases.
