DR. RODGERS: How do you plan for your first visit with a health care provider? Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

There are things you can do to help your doctor understand your health and lifestyle and help you work together. My colleague, Dr. Cara James, director of the Office of Minority Health at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, explains:

DR. JAMES: Aside from providing your insurance card, ID, and copay, it’s also helpful to share your family health history, any medications and supplements you’re taking (and the bottles so the provider can check the doses), as well as your questions.

And, if your provider says something you don’t understand, speak up!

DR. RODGERS: For dozens of tips on getting the best care from your health care provider, visit GO.CMS.gov forward slash OMH. And for more tips on staying healthy, follow us on Twitter @NIDDKgov. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers.
